Fat auf DVD-RAM

Mein mkfs.vfat weigert sich akut DVD-RAM Medien als VFAT zu
formatieren:

root at lfs:#>mkfs.vfat /dev/hdc
mkfs.vfat 2.8 (28 Feb 2001)
mkfs.vfat: Will not try to make filesystem on '/dev/hdc'

Es sollte doch auch reichen die ersten 1-2 MB einer frisch
formatierten DVDRAM-Disk per DD zu kopieren, oder? Bisher
kann ich die leider nur mit Windows formatieren, mittler-
weile existiert aber kein Windows mehr.

Zumindest läßt sich das Medium danach anstandslos als leere
Disk mounten. Fat sollte doch eigentlich nur am Anfang der
Disk die Tabellen halten, oder? Spricht etwas gegen DD?
