Whatever it was, with git-core_1.4.3.2-1%7Ebpo.1_i386.deb it now appears
to work just fine.  In the unpacked kernel tree I have:

$ du -sh */vax
112K    Documentation/vax
520K    arch/vax
244K    drivers/vax
