Gentoo auf nicht-x86 Hardware hab ich noch nicht ausprobiert, ne Alternative
wäre bestimmt noch Debian (läuft zumindest einwandfrei auf meinen beiden 
Indy's).

Hmm... hast du schonmal versucht, über hdparm DMA abzuschalten ?

Ich vermute mal, daß der IDE-Treiber im Kernel da irgendwo ein Problem mit DMA 
und dem Chipsatz in deiner Ultra 10 hat.
